DE is an example of a field where progress is probably outdistancing academic research.
I'm not sure what you mean by being "held back by campus faculty" . . . the corporate world is often the same too - things can change much faster than at a university, but it is also subject to much greater dips and falls. I suppose there is a tradeoff here - finding the balance is the key.
